Similar color tones can be obtained from several plants. What matters is whether the plant is fresh or dried, or specially prepared for dyeing - fermented. Very important is the composition of the water. Yellow shades produced by weld, goldenrod, birch leaves, myrobalan, cutch, puddle bark, apple tree leaves, dyers chamomile, french marigold. Orange shades - by red dahlia, onion skins, black tea, northern rubia, madder, heather, walnut, brazilwood modified with acid. Red shades - by northen rubia, lac (for burgundy, crimson), cochineal (magenta, pink), brazilwood. Lac and cochineal is derived from insects. Purple shades - by logwood, lac overdyed with indigo, cochineal overdyed with indigo, brazilwood overdyed with indigo. Blue shades - by indigo extracts derived from different plants grown in Europe, Asia, America. Green shades - usually some yellows overdyed with indigo or earthy tones from plants in iron water. Brown and grey shades - by black tea, oak bark, walnut, or logwood in iron water.
